Prayer and Thanksgiving

Last week I reported that my father-in-law had suffered a heart attack. He is scheduled to have triple bypass heart surgery this Monday. I would like to ask the readers of this blog to pray that God would sustain him and bring him safely through this trial. He and my mother-in-law are wonderful Christians whose hope is in the Lord. It is my prayer that God would bring glory to himself in this very human set of circumstances.

Ironically, it was 23 years ago yesterday that Sovereign Grace Community Church in Sarnia was officially organized as a church. I mention this because both of my in-laws, along with a small band of loyal Christian brothers and sisters, were instrumental in establishing the church. Everyone together had faith in God and the vision required to plant a church, and they were willing to do the hard work necessary to get it off the ground. It is one thing to talk about church planting, quite another to do it. I know that it would never have happened if God was not in it and his people did not work together.

Thus, I will always remember with great fondness the sacrificial labors of all who were involved so many years ago. And I rejoice and thank God today that the church continues to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to testify to the glorious truth of God's sovereign grace in all of its new covenant splendor. In all the events of our lives, the Lord is good; and in all these events I have learned and continue to learn what it is to be part of the family of God.
