I have just returned from the faculty/student retreat that marks the beginning of a new school year at Toronto Baptist Seminary and I am thanking the Lord for blessing our time together. We enjoyed the beauty of Central Ontario in early September at the very comfortable facilities of the Shalom Retreat Centre north of Minden. Warm sunny days and crisp cool evenings provided the natural setting for our time together. In addition to singing and studying the Word of God together, I enjoyed renewing fellowship with the returning students and meeting the new students and hearing their testimonies of God's work in their lives.
John Newton's famous hymn "Amazing Grace", keeps playing in my mind as I think of how God has called this groups of students together from different parts of the world and from an incredible array of backgrounds. Truly our God is a sovereign God! He is one who continues to seek and to save those who were lost! He has a people that he has given to his Son whom he will bring to himself through the preaching of the gospel! It is such a thrill to be a part of what God is doing today. And it is my prayer that he will raise up a mighty army of gospel warriors who will stand in his glorious name and proclaim his greatness and love to our very needy world.
In a time when many have abandoned the faith or watered it down so that it barely resembles the "good deposit" that was entrusted to us by the apostles, it is so encouraging to see the Lord stirring in the hearts of his people. We have no idea what might yet be done for the honor of his name. No eschatological scheme worthy of the name "biblical" should ever rule out God's power to revive his work and his people. It is my prayer that I will live to see such a day when men and women will call upon the Lord in a new way that surpasses anything we have ever known in this part of the world.
"Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!
Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?
Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?
For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen".
